Teenagers in violent relationships? Hard to believe? Domestic violence is perceived as the domain of grown-ups, but shocking new evidence reveals that increasing numbers of young New Zealanders are experiencing relationships which are controlling, abusive and violent. Dating Violence:
Teenagers in Love and Danger, is a daring documentary which follows the personal stories of courageous young people whose first experience of love turns violent. It may be physical, verbal or psychological abuse and all can be equally destructive.
'They are so young and vulnerable when they get into these intense relationships, it often takes years to recover,' says Anna Cottrell, director of Dating Violence. 'And what is so deeply disturbing about this is that many people who experience domestic abuse as adults had their first abusive relationship in their teens.'
All the young people who were filmed for the TV2 documentary have spoken out because they want others to know that violence happens to young people and that it has to be stopped. It is a film that combines brutal reality with laughter and hope; hope for future relationships free of violence.
