Holly's Heroes

01/01/2004

About

Holly's Heroes screened on TV2 in 2005

Holly's Heroes took out the 2005 AFI (Australian Film Institute) Award for Best Children's Television Drama. This fine accolade sits proudly alongside the Qantas Media Award for best for Best Children's Television Drama won in New Zealand. Also awarded in 2005, was the distinguished Silver Screen prize at the International Film and Video Festival Awards.

About the show

Holly is a basketball fanatic. With a father often pursuing his scientific research in far corners of the globe and a mother absorbed in event management, basketball is her anchor. Holly has her heart set on reaching the elite level of the game and using the sport to see the world.

In New Zealand, Holly was on the way to reaching her ambitions. On the brink of making the cut for the National Junior Basketball squad’s training camp and rising to the next competition level, Holly was hit with a hard foul – The McKenzies were moving to Woolich – a rural seaside town in Australia.

True to her “never give in spirit” Holly took the move as an unfortunate but temporary set-back; particularly after she discovered that Woolich was home to the Rams, one of the best regional basketball teams in Australia. HOLLY’S HEROES traces a year in the life of 14-year-old Holly McKenzie and celebrates the importance of friendship, belonging and the rewards that come from participation and a simple love of sport.

With basketball as a backdrop Holly’s Heroes is a funny and light hearted exploration of being the new kid on the block . . . making friends . . . first love . . . teamwork . . . and the ups and downs that come from being a member of a small community.

Throughout the series Holly and her newfound friends face situations that test their self-confidence, self-esteem and their own abilities. By working together they are able to rise and meet these challenges.

It’s not going to be easy but one thing is certain – Holly is going to continue to improve her game, whatever it takes.
